Tips for Selling in Today’s (and Tomorrow’s) Economy

The business world has changed, and is not going back.  What sold yesterday might not sell tomorrow.  The speed of change is increasing and strategic planning is taking a whole new shape.

The economy offers unprecedented challenges and unprecedented opportunities.  Successful businesses will be those with the vision to look forward and the ability to change.  Transformation is the name of the survival game.  But where do you start, especially if you have already established yourself in the marketplace?

  1. Be a giraffe, not an ostrich.  Burying your head in the sand and pretending it’s “business as usual” is a prescription for extinction.  Be brave.  Take a deep breath and take a serious look at your marketplace, your customer base and your product.  Scan the horizon. Look for threats and opportunities, and be ready to respond quickly.
  2. Meet a basic need in an exemplary way, at an attractive price.  It’s back to basics, and frivolous purchases are history.  Position your product as a practical solution. Starbucks doesn’t sell coffee at $4.00 a cup; they sell a comfortable offsite meeting location at a bargain price, complete with a decadent beverage.
  3. Dig deep. Inventory your skills, interests and experiences. Dissect your product or service and experiment with new combinations of components.  Consider markets and potential customers you might never have considered before.  The new economy means new markets, for those astute enough to see them.

We are surrounded by customers.  Businesses and consumers are making purchases every day.  Nothing has changed, and everything has changed.  Sales still depend on identifying and meeting customer needs, but the new economy and the new consumer demand new responses.  Be visionary, be quick, and be smart. The stakes are high –  you could be playing for the survival of your business.
